The Organisation:
TDRC Careers are excited to be once again, working with a specialist media/information M&A practice. They are a growth and value creation advisory business, and their team of experienced media leaders take owner-managed companies on a multi-year scaleup journey, working with them on the drivers of value through to exit or succession. They’ve built and sold their own companies, and they treat every client’s business like it’s their own.
 
The Role:
This organisation have ambitious plans for their growth and are seeking a Scaleup Director to join their growing  Scaleup Advisory team. This role presents an exciting opportunity to shape the future fortunes of entrepreneurs, using skills and experience to help clients scale faster and create long term value.
 
The Scaleup Director is responsible for acting as a strategic adviser, working with the owners, CEOs
and Boards of the company’s Scaleup clients on strategy and value creation. Reporting to a Scaleup
Practice Leader, and working with other members of the engagement team, the Scaleup
Director helps clients to apply and embed Scaleup programmes, provides a robust link between board
level strategy and value creation objectives, and oversees  programmes to ensure
delivery of agreed client outcomes.
 
As a core part of the Scaleup leadership team, you will be responsible for helping grow the Practice
and Scaleup business by building strong client and industry relationships, and identifying new
opportunities to win and grow client accounts.
 
Responsibilities
 
Client Delivery:
 
  • Give consistent, impactful advice, in line with best practice IP and
methodologies, on company strategy and value creation, helping founders/owners, CEOs and
executive teams to prioritise between the long term vision for the business, its 3 year plan
and its current trading vs budget
  • Embed good governance and help leadership teams to drive business performance > Mentor
the CEO (and/or Co-Founders/Senior Management Team) in evolving their own roles as
leaders and P&L owners
  • Ensure all programmes are delivering in an integrated, joined-up way across the
breadth of the engagement, ensuring clear communication across all workstreams, managing
and highlighting interdependencies, risks and issues, leading all resources that form part of
the engagement team in delivering a high-quality engagement that achieves the client's
objectives, enhances our reputation for expertise and client service, contributes to our IP, and
delivers to revenue and margin commitments.
 
Sales & Business Development:
 
  • Collaborate with  Business Development and Marketing teams to build and
continuously replenish a growing portfolio of clients to meet your personal sales target,
contributing to the overall Practice sales and growth objectives, proactively seeking
opportunities to grow accounts and bring the best of  the company’s  expertise, propositions,
and adviser network to support clients with their most important challenges
  • Actively leverage your industry network to identify prospects and referrals in the Media
sector
  • Lead new client pitches and annual renewal process for clients in your portfolio, developing
compelling solutions based on best practice and IP
  • Shape and win new business with commercial proposals that support long-term client value.
 
Thought leadership & IP development:
  • Build knowledge and position as an expert about matters relevant to the marketing services
business model and scaling a business in the media industry
  • Regularly contribute to the IP and programme delivery, identifying new
opportunities for thought leadership
  • Take an active role in the entrepreneurial community, contributing to discussions in the
Media Entrepreneur Meetup and other relevant networks
 
Leadership and collaboration:
  • Ensure our programmes align with the client’s value creation journey
  • Collaborate with other advisers (internal and external) to ensure all programmes are
delivered on target and maximise value creation for the client
  • Attend regular programme meetings to ensure all advice is aligned
  • Provide clear briefs and regular updates to the wider delivery team
  • Build effective, trusted and collegiate working relationships with colleagues, clients and
stakeholders, in line with values and culture
 
Team and people development:
  • Through a combination of on-the-job coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing, train and
develop Associate Advisers and other team members as necessary in
programme delivery methodology and subject matter expertise
  • Ensure engagement team members act and deliver with integrity at all times and
in line with processes, procedures, culture and values
  • Provide fair, timely and constructive feedback to colleagues to support performance
development.
  • Develop the role of Practice Director helping shape it for yourself and future hires
 
Typical engagement delivery duties include:
  • Ensuring all programmes are aligned with overall strategy and value creation objectives and
delivering to agreed client outcomes, with any changes or interdependencies across/between
programmes clearly communicated across all team members
  • Manage day-to-day relationships between clients and engagement teams
  • New opportunity identification and ongoing account business development
  • Highlight and actively contribute to  IP development/opportunities/new
requirements.
 
About you
 
Successful candidates for this role will have held CEO or MD roles, managing £10m+ P&L, or be a
successful entrepreneur who has scaled a media business to exit and be able to demonstrate:
 
Technical and functional expertise
  • Deep knowledge of one or more of marketing services and mixed media/events based
business models
  • Have held departmental leadership positions, managing teams and/or divisions across
functional disciplines in one or more of Sales, Marketing, Product/Content or Business
  • Planning & Strategy
  • Knowledgeable and up to date with industry developments, trends and likely client support
needs; committed to building and developing the breadth of IP and advisory
methodology
  • Confident and highly credible in their area of functional expertise, recognised as a subject
matter expert and possessing a strong network within their industry and profession (e.g.
experienced in speaking at conferences, panels, roundables)
 
Strategy and transformation expertise
  • Experience of strategic planning and growth at organisation, business unit, and operational
team level
  • Understanding of requirements for Board papers and strategy documents; ability to brief on,
develop, edit and critique strategic plans; detailed timeline and action planning to deliver to
planning milestones
  • Have led teams in high growth and/or turnaround businesses or been a principal figure in
driving significant change within a business
  • Structured problem solving and creative thinking skills, able to form and test hypotheses
about potential changes and identify unforeseen challenges and help clients to adapt
 
Commercial and financial skills
  • Proven driver of growth and profitability
  • Commercially astute, clear understanding of commercial levers to effectively manage
revenue, margin and pricing
  • Skilled business developer, able to support new business and client growth and retention
through opportunity identification on existing clients and supporting development of
proposals to prospects/new clients
  • Ability to set up assumptions and adapt budgeting and forecasting templates using
structured, proven approaches
  • Ability to help clients set up relevant KPI Reports and identify ‘North Star’ goals’
 
Client delivery and engagement management
  • Experience of leading small teams to deliver client outcomes gained in a client facing B2B
services organisation
  • Understanding of core cost components of delivery and able to manage to schedule, budget
and margin, making appropriate decisions to adjust effort/timescales as needed
 
People leadership skills
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with individuals, organisations and clients; mature, confident: able to work with complex group dynamics to align around the need for
change, have difficult conversations and 'bring people with them'
  • Humility, empathy, listening skills: understanding the client’s DNA and making best practice
work within their culture
  • Collaborative and collegiate; 'team player' mindset in sharing potential problems with
colleagues to find better solutions, share lessons learned and identify best practice
  • Supportive and coaching people management style, able to manage and mentor junior
  • resources and develop their advisory and client delivery skills
  • Inclusive and able to inspire and drive action from people with diverse backgrounds
 
Communication and IT
  • Highly organised and detail-oriented with natural habit of documenting all client and internal
communications and ensuring actions are captured and followed through to conclusion
  • Excellent written and oral communication, able to convey complex ideas simply and clearly
tailored to relevant audiences, facilitate group working and lead engaging presentations
  • IT literate with productivity tools and systems.
