The Role:
You will be reporting into the Managing Director and Media and responsible for Head of Programming, Head of Production & Content, Deputy Director, Digital Products.
The Director of Digital Media will have overall responsibility for leading the commercial and
operational delivery of the organisation’s digital output achieving a step change in income and audience reach in order to support key business objectives. The ambition is to increase the net return to the organisation, and to the artists and co-producers, to support both the organisations and sector’s financial sustainability in a fast-changing world.
Key Responsibilities
- Digital Strategy: Work with the MD, Digital to develop and execute a comprehensive digital strategy aligned with the National Theatre’s strategy and business plan, focusing on expanding reach, engagement, and accessibility.
- Content Creation and curation: Lead the creation and curation of engaging digital content for NT Live, NT at Home and NT Collection, ensuring it delivers world-class content that engages the broadest global audiences and ensures accessibility for diverse audiences, collaborating with the Managing Director, Digital and with the NT’s Executive and Programming teams.
- Budget Management: Lead the Digital department’s budget, ensuring effective resource allocation and income generation, optimising opportunities across existing and future digital output to meet financial targets from the National Theatre’s business plan (including ticket income, subscription income, sponsorship, and fundraising).
- Audience engagement: Drive innovative approaches to engage theatre enthusiasts in cinemas, homes and educational settings, tailoring strategies for varied audience segments.
- Rights acquisition and Partnerships: Collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to secure rights, partnerships and collaborations that enhance our digital offerings.
- Innovation and Growth: Explore new technologies and opportunities to elevate digital experiences, contribute to revenue generation, and support the National Theatre’s economic, environmental, and societal sustainability objectives including making leading contributions to concept development, business planning and implementation for new strands of monetised digital content and distribution.
- Leadership and collaboration: Lead a diverse Digital team, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and align digital initiatives with the National Theatre’s organisational values.
- Accessibility and inclusivity: Champion accessibility and inclusivity by ensuring digital content is accessible to all audiences, in alignment with the National Theatre’s strategic plans.
- Values integration: Embody and promote the National Theatre’s values of positive impact, passion collaboration, empowerment, and confidence in all aspects of work.
Personal qualities and skills- Proven track record in digital strategy, content creation or related roles, preferably with experience in the arts and culture sector
- Substantial experience driving and delivering commercial value through digital products with an entrepreneurial spirit and comfort working within an evolving and growing business.
- Strong leadership skills with a collaborative approach and experience managing diverse teams.
- In-depth understanding of digital trends, platforms, and technologies in the context of cultural organisations
- Budget management experience and the ability to balance revenue generation with creative aspirations.
- Established and successful track recording owning, running, and growing a P&L of equivalent size.
- Commitment to accessibility, inclusivity, and alignment with the National Theatre’s values
- Strong understanding of, and experience within, the theatrical sales and distribution market and/or streaming, OTT & D2C media environment
- High level of commercial awareness with the ability to identify, define and deliver wider opportunities which can maximise revenue generation.
- An expert negotiator and problem solver, solutions-focused with a positive and determined attitude, a strong business acumen and strong analytical and critical thinking skills enabling you to pivot and flex in a demanding and changing environment.
- Confidence and credibility to hold high level discussions with the senior stakeholders, artists, co -producers, and partners.
- Strong analytical, presentation and listening and communication skills
