The Organisation:

Digital Careers, part of the Digital Recruitment Company is currently working with a multi-billion-pound pension UK Financial Service company. They are one of the largest pension companies in the UK across care, medical underwriting and retirement income.

With a huge investment into a new digital division, they are setting up a brand-new garage to help develop, build and improve their digital brand and marketing on a digital level.

The Role:

A Product Design Lead managing a design team, working closely with engineers, user researchers, product designers, product owners and scrum masters. Leading a design function responsible for solving consumer, customer and business problems by employing design thinking and a human-centred approach to product design.

The responsibilities of the role:

  • Lead and manage a design team
  • Mentor other product designers; guides through concept, prototyping, testing and live phases
  • Responsible for designing areas of the product that meet both user needs and business goals
  • Collaborates with other leads to ensure product design is consistent with the product strategy and design system
  • Ensures pragmatic decisions are made to balance delivery towards a long-term vision
  • Provide hands-on expertise and feedback for other design team members, driving high standards
  • An advocate, ensuring appropriate design process is followed; knows when exceptions can be made
  • Champion user experience and user centred design, ensuring latest design best practices are followed in the team and throughout the business
  • Involvement in recruitment and hiring of product designers


Examples of Activities

  • Uncovers customer goals and ensures the product’s design delivers for them
  • Creates interactive prototypes to varying and appropriate levels of fidelity to support the communication of concepts and inform the crafting of detailed interactions and animations
  • Has awareness of constraints (informed by a brief), designs for what is feasible and works with others to find creative approaches to make something feasible
  • Has ongoing dialogue with stakeholders, can run workshops, creates user journeys, flows, prototypes and wireframes when/if needed
  • Supports research for discovery, ability to create diagrams or maps to illustrate consumer pain points and opportunities
  • Makes information meaningful, clear and beautiful. Including crafting the user interface and informing the Design System
  • Beyond applying colour, grids, typography, iconography etc, can creatively rework experiences and interactions with other designers and engineers to find the right balance between form and function


Experience and skills:

  • 8 years’ experience as in digital product design, user experience design, and UI design
  • 2 years leading and managing a design team
  • User Research – conducting user research sessions and deriving meaningful insights through analysis
  • Interaction Design – drawing user journeys and flows, articulating how users interact with digital products
  • Visual Design – UI design, composition, typography, visual hierarchy and brand expression
  • Prototyping – simulating proposed designs
  • Information Architecture – making information accessible, usable and understandable by structuring content and developing taxonomies
  • Copywriting – clear compelling copy that expresses a brand’s tone of voice and guides users through a product
  • Service Design – synthesis and communicate how all parts of a service contribute to delivering the service
  • and supporting customer journeys
